After reading the article, I have a deeper understanding of open education. The article describes reducing the cost of educational materials and making the Internet available for textbooks that need be expensive so that people don’t have to stress over expensive textbooks. I do approve of open education, but I think this approach needs to be improved. For example, not all students have free access to the Internet. Some students may not have computers because of their financial situation, and some because of the national government’s internet control.
Also, the knowledge in the textbooks purchased for the course is sometimes limited. For example, if you study only chapters one through eight in a class, the textbook you bought for over a hundred will only cover eight chapters. And the open internet can immediately find out more discrete knowledge and other related knowledge.
Thanks for the post, Jindi! You suggest the approach to open education needs to be improved due to not all students having access to the internet. How do you suggest those in the open movement improve that? Should they work to get everyone internet access or not use the internet for open materials? I’m interested to hear what you’d propose.
Also, just a few tips on posting. 1) give your posts an enticing title to bring in readers. 2) be sure to reference the readings you refer to. It isn’t obvious which reading you are talking to and, also, since this is a public blog, you may have readers from outside of the course that really won’t know what you’re referring to.
Thanks!
Hi Jindi. Thank you for your sharing! Yes! We must consider other problems about students themselves. As an international student, it’s really expensive to pay for a class. In addition, the cost becomes more expensive because of the exchange rate relationship between countries. I really like classes that don’t require a textbook or that are open to the public for free. Hi Jindi, I totally agree with you that not every students can access the internet, and some can not afford a PC. Yes, textbooks have many limitations compare with the internet, students can learn more through the internet.
Hey!
that is a very good point to bring up about expenses that come along with online learning like computers, that is something I did not think about right away when reading this article.
